Neighbouring Towns This part of Dordogne is a fantastic place for sight seeing. Most towns have a chateau to visit and the local market is always a great day out or you can just drive into the country. You will be surprised at the beauty of some of the smaller villages you stumble across. Riberac (11km) is the nearest market town. There are plenty of shops, cafes and bars. Every Friday it hosts one of the largest markets in this area where you can buy all sorts of local produce including the odd live chicken if you so wish.. You can try your hand at Archery in Riberac or visit the pottery and museum. Brantome (20km) has to be one of the most visited places in this area. The French call it the French Venice as it is surrounded by water where you can take a boat ride or just spend the day eating and drinking in one of the riverside cafes. The Abbaye de Brantome is a spectacular building set on the side of the Dronne River. Brantome also has Troglodytical Caves which date back to the stone age.
Perigueux (25km) is a true city. Everything you need to for the shop-a-holic. You can spend the day at the wonderful city of Perigueux and still not see half of it. Perigueux is over 2000 years old and has forty historic monuments including the cathedral of Saint Front, which is part of the world heritage. There are so many different eating and drinking places in Perigueux and everyone of them a gem. Saint Jean de Cole (35km) is one of my favourite places. Its a small town that has a wonderful Chateau and church. It must be one of the most beautiful towns in the area. Every house is crammed with character and every street a photographer's delight. Bourdeilles (14km) is so French. A great place to while away the afternoon. Bourdeilles has a very impressive chateau with an intriguing story behind it. It has some great bars and restaurants and is set in truly outstanding countryside.
Bergerac (50km) is a major city in the south of the department. You will find a buzzing cosmopolitan city alongside the old timber framed houses and historical buildings which have all gone years of restoration. Not far from Bergerac you will be able to visit a local wine producer, which is always good putting some red glow in your cheeks. Les Eyzies (80km) is one of the most prehistoric places known to us. There are cave paintings believed to be the oldest ever found. The surrounding area boasts many caves which date back thousands of years. They open up to huge caverns underground and only seeing is believing. Sarlat (90km) is an old city built in the hills overlooking the Dordogne River. Its quaint streets, beautiful out look, old houses etc., make this old city the most visited city in the Dordogne region. Sarlat has more listed buildings per square mile than any other city in Europe. The English flock here so be warned, although it is really picturesque it becomes extremely busy in the height of the summer. Bordeaux (200km), the second largest city in France. It is built on a system of rivers and has some very impressive historic buildings and bridges. Another great place for the shopping and eating out. |
